Councilmember Kwame Brown rolled up his sleeves and bagged groceries to help raise awareness and funding to fight prostate cancer. He served as a “celebrity guest bagger” at the Safeway store at Georgia Avenue and Piney Branch Road, NW on Friday, June 20 from 11:30 am to 2 pm. During the month of June, customers will be asked to show their appreciation for his good efforts by making donations to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, as part of Safeway’s month-long fundraising effort.

With just two school days remaining before the "big-test" Councilmember Brown visited 10 Davis Elementary classrooms to give a pep talk to students preparing for the annual assessment test. Each April, DCPS students in grades 3-8 and 10 take the District of Columbia Comprehensive Assessment System (DC-CAS). The DC-CAS is the "big-test" that measures students' knowledge and skills in math, reading, science and writing. The DC-CAS helps guid instruction by identifying the areas in which students need additional support and challenges. It is also critical in determining DCPS' compliance with No Child Left Behind. The academic performance of our students is far below what it needs to be. In addition, a number of our older students fail to show up to take the test. In following Chancellor Rhee's efforts to help our students achieve at the highest levels, Councilmember Brown visited Davis Elementary to provide students with a large dose of encouragement as they prepared during the final days before the DC-CAS. Brown promised to reward all students he visited with a special celebration to recognize their efforts.

On Monday, April 14 from 12:00-2:00pm, the Humanities Council celebrated Emancipation Day with performances and discussion about the disconnect between the Civil Rights and Hip-Hop generations. The catalyst for this discussion began with a conversation about the pivotal 1968 riots, which occurred during the Civil Rights Movement and how its affects still resonate today. Do young people have a lack of understanding for the struggles of “the civil rights movement” and is their disrespect by the “civil rights generation” towards the struggles of the “hip-hop generation? Council Member At-Large Kwame Brown was awarded the distinguished “Champion for the Humanities” from the Humanities Council of Washington, DC for his continuing support of the Council’s work in the District. Brown then quickly switched gears to serve as a panelist.

Today, the D.C. Council passed landmark legislation to create a Compliance Unit within the Office of the DC Auditor. The original legislation, the Compliance and Enforcement Agency Establishment Act of 2007, authored by Councilmember Brown and co-introduced by eleven members of the Council, was introduced on November 16, 2007. The amended bill, the Compliance Unit Establishment Act of 2008, is the culmination of feedback from Economic Development Committee public hearings, District residents, business owners, and major project tours like that of the new Nationals’ stadium.
