ABOUT KWAME

 
Brown is a vocal, visible and active member of the DC Council. He continues to fulfill his promises to DC residents by creating and supporting common sense legislation. A few examples include:


Improving Education


  1. The School Modernization Funds Resolution of 2007, which authorized $30 million to rebuild Phelps Architecture, Construction and Engineering Academy giving new educational opportunities for DC youths. Phelps opened in August of 2008.

  2. The School Modernization Financing Act of 2005 (A16-341) providing $3 billion in revenue bonds for the reconstruction and repair of schools.


Jobs, Economic Fairness, Affordable Housing, and Revitalizing Neighborhoods


  1. The Compliance and Enforcement Agency Establishment Act of 2007 (B17-503) to hold developers to their promises of jobs for DC residents, affordable housing, local business participation and environmental protections.

  2. The Rent Control Reform Act of 2006, which protects affordable housing by preventing drastic rent increases.


Reducing Crime and Aiding Victims of Domestic Violence


  1. The Victims of Domestic Violence Establishment Fund Act (A16-71), which resulted in $6.5 million in FY 2006 Budget Support Act, tripling the number of shelter bed for domestic abuse victims in the District of Columbia from 48 to 150 beds, including $1 million for My Sister’s Place to complete an important expansion project.

  2. Supported funding for 350 additional officers to the force to help reduce crime and put more cops on the streets.


Environmental Initiatives


  1. The Green Building Act of 2006 (A16-590) requiring green building standards for public and private buildings.
