As a graduate of the DC public school system, father of two kids in a DC public elementary school, and husband of a former public school teacher, Councilmember Brown understands the challenges parents and teachers face when providing our children with a quality education.
Music, PE and Arts for All: Councilmember Brown’s most recent action was to introduce the “Creative Learning Program Act of 2008” (B17-592). The bill would make it mandatory that all elementary schools in the District have music, physical education, and visual arts programs starting in the 2008-2009 school year. Economic Equality and Fairness

To address these issues Brown is continuing to focus on:
-
•Economic Equality and Fairness—All DC residents, regardless of their background or neighborhood, should have equal opportunities to participate in and benefit from economic development to increase their quality of life.
-
-
•Jobs and Workforce Enhancement—DC residents need to have the education and hands-on training necessary to participate in economic development and be hired for local jobs.
-
-
•Affordable Housing—Families should be able to live where they work.
-
-
•Environmental Initiatives— Councilmember Brown supports initiatives that prepare DC residents for a green collar economy and provide them with a healthier environment.
-
-
•Revitalizing Neighborhoods—Local people need local jobs and local business owners need local solutions.

Accountable, Measurable Results
To have responsive government, there must be accountability and measurability. In other words, promises made should be promises kept. Councilmember Brown’s priority is to measure progress and enforce the rules when District dollars are at stake.
That is why Councilmember Brown introduced the Compliance and Enforcement Agency Establishment Act of 2007 (B17-503). He plans to hold developers to their promises of jobs for DC residents, affordable housing, local business participation and environmental protections.
Open, Transparent Government
All DC residents deserve equal access to government and equal opportunity to benefit from government funded programs, projects and services. Feedback and ideas from the community are critical to developing good public policies and to providing equality and fairness.
In order to get community input, Councilmember Brown will continue to bring the government to the people by holding public hearings and community roundtables. He will also work to see first-hand what is happening in the community by personally touring neighborhoods, economic development projects, and business corridors.
